Chicago Express News Release

Hoffman Estates, IL - The Chicago Express, proud member of the ECHL and proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, battled back from a 3-1 second period deficit, but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Toledo Walleye at the Sears Centre Arena on Saturday night.

Chicago jumped on top of the Walleye early at 3:23 when D Scott Wietecha fired a shot toward the net that was deflected out in front to Jonathan Zion who slid a backhanded goal past G Alec Richards for the quick lead. Just 45 seconds later the Walleye knotted it back up when D Bryan Rufenach took a pass from RW Nick Oslund and ripped a slap shot from the blue line that barely skirted over the leg pads of Express G Allen York. The Walleye tallied another score at 14:24 after LW Mike Thomas centered a pass to C Joey Martin who hammered home an uncontested one-timer in front of York to make the score 2-1. Despite the one goal deficit, Chicago held a 7-6 shot advantage in the frame.

Toledo didn't waste any time in the second when Martin added his second tally of the game at 3:29 after taking a pass from RW Kyle Rogers and burying a shot past York. Not to be outdone, Zion added his second score of the night at 8:01 on the power play by snapping a quick shot over Richards' glove. Chicago tied the game back up at 3 when the Captain, Nathan Lutz, wrapped around behind the net and flipped the puck across an unsuspecting Richards at 11:25. The period would end tied at 3-3 while Chicago held a 16-12 advantage in the shot department.

After neither team scored during the third period or overtime, the game moved on to a shootout. Both D Taylor Ellington and RW Chaz Johnson scored in the first two rounds, but Toledo would come back to score three more times and earn the extra point with the 4-3 victory.
