Palacios Strong as SeaWolves Take Opener in Trenton

The SeaWolves snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday night as they won the series opener over the Trenton Thunder 5-1 at Arm & Hammer Park.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the second inning against Trenton starter Jeremy Bleich. With two outs, Steven Moya struck out but reached on a wild pitch extending the inning for Dean Green. Green on a check swing bouncer to third, beat out an infield single and a throwing error by the third baseman put runners on second and third. Francisco Martinez followed with a two-run single to right for a 2-0 Erie lead.

In the top of the fourth, Wade Gaynor led off with a double and moved to third on a Moya groundout. Gaynor scored on a wild pitch making it 3-0 SeaWolves.

The 'Wolves again added to the lead in the top of the fifth when Corey Jones led off and blasted a solo home run, his first, over the wall in right for a 4-0 advantage. The home run for Jones was his first since August 31, 2013 with Lakeland. The home run that night was against the Yankees affiliate Tampa.

In the sixth, the 'Wolves would go ahead 5-0. Aaron Westlake singled and Gaynor doubled putting runners on second and third. The double for Gaynor was his seventh in his last five games. With one out, Green hit into a fielder's choice and Westlake was retired at the plate. Martinez came through again with a base knock, scoring Gaynor.

Trenton got on the board in the last of the sixth against Erie starter Wilsen Palacios. With one out, Palacios walked Rob Segedin and Gary Sanchez. Tyler Austin singled to load the bases for Peter O'Brien. O'Brien hit into a fielder's choice, plating Segedin for the lone Trenton run.

The Erie relievers in Kenny Faulk, Brennan Smith and Jose Valdez worked the final three innings to preserve the Erie win.

Palacios (3-1) allowed a run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings. He has worked six innings in three consecutive starts and becomes the first Erie starter to win back-to-back starts.
