New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Gabe Jacobo continued his recent hot streak with his second home run of the season, but the Fisher Cats (15-22) missed too many scoring chances overall in a 3-2 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils (18-17). The defeat is the team's third straight, leaving them in need of a win on Wednesday to salvage the finale of the three-game set with Reading.
Jacobo had been struggling prior to the Fisher Cats series in Portland last weekend. After four hits over the weekend and another pair on Monday night, he extended his hitting streak to four games with his solo home run in the second inning. The blast, which came on the first pitch he saw from Perci Garner, put the Fisher Cats on top, 1-0.
Aaron Sanchez kept the lead for the Fisher Cats until the fifth when he allowed the Phils to claw back with a two-out rally. It began with a walk of the ninth man in the line-up, Edgar Duran. Carlos Alonso followed with a double to left to plate Duran to tie the game. Albert Cartwright singled to bring home Alonso for a 2-1 Reading lead.
The Fisher Cats had several opportunities against Garner, but couldn't break through again until the seventh. They chased Garner with a single, a sacrifice, and walk. After the pitching change, a single by Kevin Nolan loaded the bases, setting up Ryan Schimpf with a sac fly to center field to tie the game at 2-2.
It didn't stay tied very long, however. Alonso led off the top of the eighth by hammering the first pitch thrown by Scott Gracey off the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill to put Reading back on top, 3-2.
The Fisher Cats had one more chance to tie the game in the eighth. Michael Crouse led off with a single, but a series of force outs stranded the potential game-tying run at first. The Fisher Cats left nine men on the bases in the game, going 1-7 with a sac fly with runners in scoring position. They are just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the two games in the series, both one-run losses.
The teams wrap up the series with another morning game at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday. It's an EnergyNorth Propane Educational Day featuring interactive, educational exhibits on the concourse. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, at the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
The pitching match-up for Wednesday morning features Deck McGuire (3-4, 3.40) against Reading lefty Jesse Biddle (3-4, 3.63). Radio coverage begins with Tom Gauthier at 10:15 a.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
