Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Crestwood, IL - A trio of ThunderBolt runs in the 3rd inning and 5th helped Windy City take the season series with Florence Thursday night at Hawkinson Ford Field. The Bolts bashed the Freedom 7-3.
Windy City ousted Florence starter Mike Causey in the midst of the first three-spot. He lasted just 2 innings and two-thirds and was pushed over the edge with a hit by pitch of Justin Schuda. The first batter reliever Curt Moenter faced, Schuda, pasted a 2-run single to add to the Bolts advantage. Nick Ewen began the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Florence provided something of a mirror image in the 5th against Bolts pitcher Scott Anderson. The right-hander departed with the bases loaded in the frame. Mike Renery entered from the bullpen and walked Trevor Hall. The next batter, Kyle Geswein, punched a double into the right field corner to square the score at 3-3. The inning ended as Geswein was tagged out at 2nd.
In the 5th, Windy City blitzed Moenter for 3 more. Justin Schuda smashed a ball down the right field line for a run-scoring double. Clemente Bonilla scored his second run on a Matt Ferrara sac fly to center. A wild pitch off the hand of righty Mickey O'Quinn sealed the scoring in the 5th. The final Bolt run traipsed across as Jason Crosland singled Schuda home.
Neither manager was involved in the contest. Brent Bowers and Jamie Keefe were suspended one game for their parts in a benches-clearing situation the night before. Renery earned the win for Windy City, his first out of the bullpen.
On the offensive side, Crosland finished 2-for-3 with 3 driven in and Schuda's 3 runs paced the team in that category. Doug Schutt and Bonilla eached crossed twice.
The Bolts bullpen chucked 4 innings and a third of scoreless relief among Renery, Wes Mindingall and Lenny Bays.
The Bolts and Freedom celebrated the more-than 80 years of history of the Negro Leagues during the game as each team wore jerseys of Negro League teams past. Johnny Washington, Charles Johnson and Hank Presswood, all former Negro League players, were at Hawkinson Ford Field to sign autographs and speak with park-goers.
Tomorrow begins the tail end of the 6-game home stand as the Chillicothe Paints pull up to Hawkinson Ford. Righty Bobby Mack takes to the bump for the third time this year for Windy City. You can find every pitch starting at 7:05 on www.sportsjuice.com
