Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies dropped a rain-shortened 6 1/2 inning game to the Chillicothe Paints 4-3 Thursday night in Chillicothe, OH. The game initially began one hour late because of poor field conditions.

The Grizzlies are 35-40. Chillicothe is 44-34.

The Grizzlies erased a 2-0 deficit with four two-out hits in the sixth inning. Phil Warren had the third of those hits and he plated Mike Breyman who had singled and Ben Margalski who had doubled. The tie was short-lived as the Paints came back with two in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2. Shawn Smarsh made it 4-3 when he drove a ball to the right-center field gap in the seventh. Paints center-fielder Steve Martin couldn't get to the ball, and Smarsh rounded the bases for his second career inside-the-park home run.

As the top of the seventh ended, the rains came washing away any hopes the Grizzlies had of leacing Chillicothe with a win.

Brandon Smith (10-3) took the loss for the Grizzlies. He picked up his seventh complete game of the year in the loss. That is good for tops in the league. John Martinez (16-2) got the win for Chillicothe. He also recorded his seventh complete game.

Breyman was 3-3 in the game. Warren was 1-3 with the two RBIs. Smarsh was 1-4.

The Grizzlies return home to begin a three-game series with Florence Friday night at GMC Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
