Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - The Richmond Roosters committed a season-high seven errors, and lost to the Rockford RiverHawks, 6-3, on Wednesday night in Rockford. The loss extended the Roosters winless streak to six games.
Richmond got off to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Mike Bidwell hit a ground ball to Rockford's third baseman, Todd Dulaney. Dulaney tried to beat Tony Sanguinetti to the third base bag to end the inning but when he couldn't do that, he threw wildly to first allowing the Roosters second run to score. The lead for Richmond was the first time the team had been ahead of an opponent in a game since defeating Ohio Valley, 7-6, seven days ago.
Rockford scored a run in the bottom half of the inning and tied the score in the third inning. In the third, Olmo Rosario came around to score on an error by Kiley Vaughn. Nick Johnson reached on an infield hit, and when Vaughn bobbled the ball, Rosario came home to score. Two Richmond errors, both on recently acquired first baseman Chris DiBlasi helped Rockford take the lead in the fifth. DiBlasi couldn't handle Bidwell's throw on Dulaney's groundball allowing the Rockford third baseman to reach base. He went to second when a pickoff attempt by Tony Casoli went by DiBlasi. After Jerome McCoy flew out, Jeremy Busch hit dribbler down the first baseline. The Roosters waited for the ball to go foul but it did not and Dulaney came all the way around to score to make it 3-2 Rockford. RBI singles by McCoy and Rosario would bring in two runs in the sixth. Each team would add a run in the eighth inning.
Tony Casoli got the loss (7-4). For the Roosters All-Star right-hander, it was the first time that he has lost back-to-back starts this season. Frank James (2-2) got the win, while Jason Glosser retired the Roosters in order in the ninth for his second save in as many nights.
The final game of the series between Richmond and Rockford is on Thursday at 7:05 Indiana time. Matt Schweitzer (6-6, 3.64 ERA) will start on three days rest. Tanner Watson (1-3, 5.96 ERA) will go for Rockford as the RiverHawks look to sweep the season series from Richmond.
