Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford's doctors and lawyers are ready to rumble once again.
The Rockford RiverHawks will host the third annual Doctors vs. Lawyers game at 4:05 p.m. Monday, August 22, at Marinelli Field. The charity baseball event will precede that night's RiverHawks-Kalamazoo game, which starts at 7:05 p.m.
Former major-leaguers George "Boomer" Scott and Minnie Minoso will serve as the celebrity managers. Scott, a longtime first baseman for the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers, was a three-time All-Star, an eight-time Gold Glover winner and hit 36 home runs to lead the American League in 1975. Minoso played for Cleveland, St. Louis and the Washington Senators, but the outfielder is best known for three stints with the Chicago White Sox as well as appearances in major-league games in five different decades, from 1949 to 1980. Minoso was a seven-time All-Star and won three Gold Gloves.
All doctors and lawyers participating in this game purchase 20 box seats. The RiverHawks donate $2 from each ticket sold to each team's charity. The lawyers' charity is the Prarie State Legal Fund. The doctors will sponsor a charity of their choice.
"Not only is this a worthy cause for both charities, but it's an honor to have two of the all-time greats of baseball here at Marinelli Field as our celebrity managers," RiverHawks sales director Josh Olerud said.
The RiverHawks will donate an additional $500 to the charity chosen by the winning team.
This year's game is actually the fourth in the series. The first game was played in 1887, with the Doctors winning, 27-21. The series was interrupted for more than a century, with play resuming in 2003. Last year, the Lawyers won, 13-6, for their first victory.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
