Florence Y'alls News Release
Edwin Padua lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the 11th to plate Ryan Skellie and send the Florence Freedom (9-6) to an 8-7 win over the Rockford Aviators (1-13).
The Freedom got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI single by DH Byron Wiley to put the Freedom up 1-0. Rockford would come right back in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead on a three-run home run by first baseman Kenny Bryant.
The Freedom would rally back to tie it in the third on a pair of sacrifice flies off of Aviators starter Drew Rucinski. Florence would then push ahead in the fifth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Edwin Padua, who entered the game after shortstop Junior Arrojo left the game with an injury.
Rockford would come right back and take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer by Bryant, his second of the game and second of the season.
Florence would once more come back and take a 7-5 lead in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI single by catcher Jim Jacquot and a two-run double by centerfielder Pablo Bermudez.
However, the Freedom would blow a lead for the third time. Shortstop Ted Obregon led off the top of the seventh with a walk and came around to score two batters later on a triple by third baseman Matt Greener. Michael Hur followed up in the next at bat with a single to plate Greener and tie the game at seven.
The game would stay tied until the 11th inning. After Jorge Marban (W, 1-0) got the final out in the top half of the inning, Ryan Skellie led off the 11th with a single. He would go to third on a well-executed hit and run by Bermudez to put runners on the corners with nobody out. That's when Padua stepped to the plate and lifted a fly to right field off of Kelley Wagner (L, 0-1) that was deep enough to score Skellie from third and send the Freedom to 8-7 victory and a three-game sweep of the Aviators.
The Freedom have two off days before they host Gateway in a three game series, beginning with a double header on Wednesday night. First pitch for game one is at 5:45. The University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium gates open one hour earlier at 4:45. The game can be heard on 1320-AM WCVG and gospel1320.com. Steve Jarnicki will have the call beginning with the pregame show at 5:30.
