Beach Bums Bats Strike Late in Win

SAUGET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings, propelling the Beach Bums to an 8-4 win over the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon.

Traverse City got the offense started in the second inning as with Chase Burch on first, Sean Gusrang hit his first homerun of the season to left-center, putting the Beach Bums up 2-0. That lead would hold until the bottom of the fifth when Michael Pair and Jonathan Johnson hit back-to-back homers for the Grizzlies, tying the score at 2-2.

TC responded in the top of the sixth as after one-out singles by Burch and Nidiffer, the Gateway defense opened the door. An error by Vladimir Frias allowed Burch to score on a ball hit by Gusrang. Zach Kometani came up and grounded a ball to third. Max Ayarza stepped on the his base, but then airmailed the throw to first allowing Gusrang to score and Kometani to go to second. Chris Cowell then stepped in and singled home Kometani for a 5-2 lead.

After the Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the sixth, the Beach Bums got three more in the seventh, keyed by a two-run Burch single. The win went to Jacob Clem (2-2) who went seven innings, allowing three runs, striking out three. Tim Brown (2-2) took the loss for the Grizzlies.

Offensively, Cowell had two hits. Nidiffer and Taylor Wrenn each had a hit in the game extending their hitting streaks to eight games apiece.

The Beach Bums return home on Tuesday, June 4 when they will take on the Lake Erie Crushers at 7:05 pm. It is a Two For Tuesday with 2-for-1 pricing on all chairback seats.
