
Miners Sweep Frontier Greys

Marion, IL - The Miners earned their first sweep of the 2013 season with a 6-2 victory over the Frontier Greys on Sunday night at Rent One Park. Miners starting pitcher Cody Hall earned his first victory of the season as he pitched five solid innings, only allowing two runs (one earned). He gave up four hits, walked four batters and struck out two batters.
The Miners trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning as the Frontier Greys scored a run off Cody Hall. Cannon Lester scored on a wild pitch by Greys starter Graham Johnson to tie the game at 1-1. The Miners jumped to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when catcher Mario Mercedes hit a sacrifice fly to score left fielder Carlos Colmenares.
The Greys tied the game at two off Hall in the top of the fourth inning. Southern Illinois would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Carlos Colmenares hit a base hit to score right fielder Ken Gregory who led off the inning with a triple. DH Phil Butler scored the second run of the inning on a base hit by center fielder Tyler Hall to give the Miners a 4-2 lead.
Two more runs were added in the bottom of the eighth inning Ken Gregory hit a RBI double and Phil Butler hit a RBI single off Greys reliever Kyle Brady to give Southern Illinois a 6-2 lead. Brandon Cunniff recorded the final four outs of the game to earn his sixth save on the season, striking out three batters.
Dayne Quist tossed two scoreless innings and Matt Sergey pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning in the eighth.
The Miners are off until Wednesday when they will be playing a double header against the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field. Game one will get underway at 4:35 pm. Mike Ventola will have the call on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 4:15 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
