Washington Wild Things News Release
Continuing last night's suspended game, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, lost a marathon in 19 innings, 4-3, on June 2nd from Standard Bank Stadium.
Centerfielder Andrew Brauer hit a walk-home run off of Will Scott to end the four hour and 41 minute game.
Third Baseman Jovan Rosa was 5-for-7 with two RBI in the longest game in Washington history.
In the bottom of the fifth, leftfielder Jeff Harkensee open the frame with a lead of single. After a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Miles Walding, third baseman Ryan Soares hit a blooper into right field scoring Harkensee and cutting the Wild Things lead 3-2. Lee got out of the inning by getting second baseman Mike Torres to ground into the 4-6-3 double play.
The Wild Things left runners on third and second in the top of six, Windy City would make them pay for not cashing in some insurance runs.
Rosa would commit an error, allowing catcher Zach Aakhus to reach first. Designated Hitter Chad Cregar singled putting runners on the corner for the Thunderbolts. Brauer hit a broken bat single scoring Aakhus to tie the game at three. After a sacrifice bunt by rightfielder Nathan Tomaszewski, Lee would make an amazing defensive play on a dribbler back to the mound. With Cregar charging home, Lee flipped the ball with his glove to catcher Jim Vahalik, who applied the tag for out number two. Harkensee would chase a high fastball, striking out to end the inning.
Gary Lee allowed a lead-off double to Brauer to start the bottom of the 11th, and Lee's book would be closed after he intentionally walked Joyce. He went seven and 1/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits, and striking out three.
With runners on the corner, in comes lefty Matt Phillips with one out. Phillips struck out pinch-hitter Louie Templeton and then got Walding to lined-out at Beatty ending the bottom of the 11th.
Again in the bottom of the 12th, Windy City look ready to win the game with the bases loaded and two outs. Phillips struck out the pinch-hitter Adam Davis looking to keep the game alive.
In a recurring theme of the day, Phillips held the rope for the Wild Things. After having first baseman Doug Joyce to fly out, Phillips allowed back-to-back singles by Templeton and Walding. He struck out Soares and Torres to end the inning.
Davis opened the top of the 18th with a single off Will Scott. Scott struck out Joyce and get Templeton to fly out, to give the team two outs. Walding drew a walk and Scott threw a wild pitch advancing the runners to second and third. Scott halted the possible Thunderbolt win by Soares to fly out to Sandford in centerfield.
Washington returns home on Tuesday, June 4th when they take on the traveling Frontier Greys at CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
