Norfolk, VA - The Providence Bruins shutout the Norfolk Admiral 7-0 Wednesday evening at the Norfolk Scope. The P-Bruins got their goals from Byron Bitz, Jeff Hoggan, Nate Thompson, Jeff LoVecchio, Matt Hendricks and two goals from Chris Collins. The 47-15-3-3 Atlantic Division leading P-Bruins are back in action Friday against the Binghamton Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena at 7:05 p.m. Providence remains ten points ahead of the second place Hartford Wolf Pack.
The P-Bruins opened up the scoring at the 3:05 mark, while on the power play. Jonathan Sigalet held the puck behind the net and sent a centering pass to Bitz. He put the puck past Admirals net minder Jonathan Boutin and into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. Martins Karsums recorded the second assist. Providence took a 2-0 lead at the 16:29 mark when Hoggan was awarded a penalty shot. He scored his 28th goal of the season, putting the puck between the legs of Boutin and into the net. Providence had a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Less than a minute into the second period, the P-Bruins took a 3-0 lead at the 45 second mark. The P-Bruins were shorthanded and the Admirals Kevin Quick had the puck in the neutral zone. He lost his balance giving Thompson a breakaway. Thompson tallied his 16th goal of the season, an unassisted goal. At the 12:45 mark the P-Bruins scored their first even strength goal of the game. Hendricks worked the puck out of the right corner and tossed it in front of the crease to Collins, who poked the puck into the net for his 18th goal of the season. Providence wrapped up the second period scoring with their second shorthanded goal of the game. At the 18:34 mark, Thompson and LoVecchio had a 2-on-1 opportunity. Thompson brought the puck into the zone down the right wing and flipped it over David Schneider, who was diving to block the pass. LoVecchio put the puck on his backhand and wrapped the puck around Boutin and into the net for his second goal of the season. Providence led 5-0 going into the second intermission.
In the third period, the P-Bruins took a 6-0 lead at the 11:09 mark. Karsums sent the puck down the right wing, giving Hendricks a breakaway. On his first shot, Boutin made the save with his skate, but the puck sat in the crease and Hendricks found it first, scoring his 20th goal of the season. Twelve seconds later, the P-Bruins finished off the scoring on the evening. Collins sent the puck to the net from the left boards and the puck went off a skate in front of the goal and into the net. For Collins it was his second goal of the evening and 19th of the season. LoVecchio and Hendricks picked up the assist as the P-Bruins went on to the 7-0 victory.
Tuukka Rask earned his first professional shutout stopping all 27 shots he faced for the P-Bruins, while Boutin made 26 saves and Marc Denis six saves for the Admirals. The P-Bruins went 1 for 5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Atlantic Division-leading P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center for three games Friday, March 28 for Jordan Sigalet Poster Night versus the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m., Saturday, March 29 against the Portland Pirates at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday, March 30 versus the Worcester Sharks at 4:05 p.m. Information on P-Bruins individual tickets for the 2007-08 regular season and ticket packages for the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto the team website at providencebruins.com.
