Monsters Shot Down by Americans
March 20, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
The Lake Erie Monsters built a two-goal lead on four answered in the second, but the overtime period did them in as Rochester left town with a 5-4 victory at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night.
The Rochester Americans came into The Q with a ton of energy out of the blocks as Marc-Andre Gragnani opened the scoring at the 6:01 mark of the first. Gragnani's goal was assisted by defenseman Clarke MacArthur and winger Dylan Hunter.
Amerks right wing Rob Globke notched his ninth marker of the year to gain the 2-0 advantage on a pass from Drew Larman at 13:51 of the first.
To start off the second period with a bang, Chris Stewart scored his team-leading 21st goal of the season at the 3:46 mark. Eric Healey and Brad Richardson were credited with the helpers. Richardson has now recorded 19 points in his last 11 games.
Dan DaSilva notched the game up at 2-2, as he potted his ninth goal of the season on a pass from defenseman Mike Vernace. T.J. Hensick was also given a helper on the DaSilva tally at the 9:07 mark of the second.
To take the lead, Lake Erie's captain Wyatt Smith posted his 13th marker of the season at the 12:27 of the second. Smith tapped in a rebound in mid-air that clanked off the post from a Vladimir Denisov slapper, while the team was short handed.
Adding to the Monsters lead, Rob Drummond flew into the Rochester zone on a breakaway that seemed to span only a split second. Drummond beat goaltender Adam Dennis to his gloveside at the 17:54 mark of the second. Jamie Lundmark was given the lone assist on Drummond's second goal of the season.
Rochester bounced back to score two goals in the third period to thwart the Lake Erie scoring streak of four unanswered in the second. In his first pro game, Parma native Tommy Goebel netted his first goal 2:57 into the third (assists: Stefan Meyer, David Brine). The second goal in the sequence was scored by Tanner Glass with 5:05 remaining in the game (assists: Jordan Henry, Paul Baier).
The regulation of three sets finished at a 4-4 tie and the game went into sudden death overtime. The Amerks took it as their chance to escape Cleveland with a win as Brine netted his eighth goal of the season, 2:55 into overtime. Goebel and Gragnani were given the assists on the game winner.
NOTES:
Streaks intact: Eric Healey - Seven-game point streak (5G, 6A)
Wyatt Smith - Five-game point streak (4G, 4A)
T.J. Hensick - Four-game point streak (5 A)
Lake Erie goalie Tyler Weiman made 41 saves on 46 shots on the night, while Rochester backstop Dennis denied 29 of 33 that he faced.
The Monsters now hit the road on Friday to face Peoria and Quad City in back-to-back nights. They return home on Tuesday, March 25th to face the division rival Manitoba Moose at 7:00 p.m.
