P-Bruins Head Onto the Road After 2-1 Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Bruins topped the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 Monday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center. (The game was postponed from Sunday afternoon due to the storm.)

It was a quiet beginning to the contest, with the teams combining for only one shot in the first 7:30. (Providence had that bid, plus 12 more in the period.) Ben Sexton had a great scoring chance on a one-timer from the left side of the slot, but the puck bounced off of his stick.

Steve Eminger scored on a rebound from a similar spot to Sexton's chance at 17:15. The Bruins entered the dressing room for the first intermission with the only goal of the game.

Manchester had the first (and most) scoring chance in the second period. About six minutes in, Brian O'Neill hit the post. Justin Florek came back the other way with a 2-on-1 bid, but Jean-Francois Berube made the save. Later in the frame, Andrew Cresenzi had a one-timer hit the post on the far side to cap off a 2-on-1.

The Monarchs had two minute-plus-long stretches during their power plays, which came together on a high-sticking double minor to Ethan Werek, but neither resulted in the game-tying goal. The Monarchs ended the period with a last second 2-on-1, but Jeremy Smith made the save.

Rob Flick got the Bruins back on the board with the eventual game-winner just beyond the halfway point of the third. Jean-Francois Berube came out of the net to clear a puck and avoid a Providence breakaway, but Flick grabbed the puck just inside the blue line and capitalized while the goalie was out of position.

The Granite State squad pulled back within one less than two minutes later, spoiling Smith's shutout bid. Brian O'Neill fed the puck to Andrew Bodnarchuk on the doorstep, and the former P-Bruin re-directed it five-hole on Smith to make it 2-1.

The Monarchs pulled their goaltender with more than 1:20 to go, but could not get another past the Providence netminder.

After extending their home win streak to eight games,the Bruins kick off a five-game, two-state road trip with a contest on Friday at 7:05pm against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
