Charlotte Outlasts Norfolk in 4-3 Shootout Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite a three-goal comeback, the Norfolk Admirals fell short in the shootout for a 4-3 loss to the Charlotte Checkers Monday afternoon at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

Just 1:24 into the first period, Charlotte notched the first tally of the game. Dennis Robertson shot the puck from the left circle, and Jason LaBarbera made the initial save. Brock McGinn scooped up the rebound and attempted to put the puck in the net, but LaBarbera made another save. McGinn was there to grab his own rebound and slide it underneath the sprawling netminder for a 1-0 Checkers lead.

Alex Aleardi added another goal to the board late in the first on the power play. Aleardi picked the puck off of the wall, and swung it over to Trevor Carrick. Carrick fed the puck back to Aleardi in the slot, who one-timed it over the shoulder of LaBarbera at 13:14. Beau Schmitz earned the secondary assist to extend the lead.

Charlotte lit the lamp again in the second period, also on the power play. Zach Boychuk skated the puck up the right side and past Norfolk's defense. Sliding across the crease, Boychuk beat LaBarbera high blocker side to give the Checkers a 3-0 advantage at 9:32.

The Admirals minimized their deficit to two with just under five minutes to go in the second. Captain Dave Steckel won a face-off that landed on the stick of Joseph Cramarossa's stick, who threw a pass back to Colby Robak on the blue line. Robak took the shot, and John Kurtz tipped the puck in front to beat Charlotte goaltender John Muse at 15:49.

With a mere 0.9 seconds left in the middle frame, William Karlsson beat a fallen Muse to put the Admirals within one of the Checkers. Steckel won another face-off that went back to Andrew O'Brien at the point. O'Brien took the shot towards the Checker's net, and the puck hit Karlsson skating towards the cage. Karlsson dove with the puck on his backhand and swept it past Muse to make it a 3-2 game.

Much of the third period went scoreless until Cramarossa tied it up at 15:39. He received an outlet pass from Dany Heatley at center ice springing a breakaway. Cramarossa went high blocker to beat Muse and make it a 3-3 contest.

A winner couldn't be decided in 60 minutes, nor in the overtime session, sending both teams to a three-man shootout. While Brody Sutter and Stefan Noesen each scored in the first round, neither team converted in the second or third rounds. McGinn buried the puck past LaBarbera in the fourth set, and Charlotte recorded the win as Muse saved Max Friberg's attempt.

Jason LaBarbera turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced, and John Muse saved 46 of 49 Norfolk opportunities. Charlotte blanked the Admirals on their two power play chances. The Checkers went two-for-five on the man advantage.

The Admirals are now 21-24-3-3, and sit tied for 13th with Bridgeport in the Eastern Conference.

Norfolk will head to Worcester this weekend to take on the Sharks for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, followed by a matinee on Sunday against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

NOTES ... William Karlsson has a point in three straight games and eight points in his last seven AHL contests ... Joseph Cramarossa now has four multi-point games this season ... Two of John Kurtz's three goals this year have come against Charlotte ... Colby Robak's assist tonight was his first point as an Admiral ... Max Friberg has a plus-minus rating of +7 against the Checkers in six games so far this year ... The Admirals' 19 shots in the third period were their most in any third period this season, and their 49 total shots were the second-most this year.
