BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The New York Islanders announced today that defenseman Matt Carkner has been loaned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Carkner, 34, has played 237 games in the National Hockey League over a seven-year career with the Islanders, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks. The Winchester, Ont., native opened the 2014-15 season on injured reserve with a back injury and has yet to play a game.

The Islanders signed Carkner as a free agent on July 1, 2012. He's played 75 games for the Islanders over three years. Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round (58th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Carkner will suit up for his fourth American Hockey League team this season. The 6-foot-5 defenseman previously played for the Cleveland Barons, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Binghamton Senators.
