Overtime Thriller Caps off Six-Point Trip for Wings
February 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
ORLANDO, FL- Alex Mallet tallied an overtime winner seconds into the extra period, and was able to secure a 4-3 victory for the Kalamazoo Wings over the Orlando Solar Bears on Monday at Amway Center.
Orlando took their first lead of the three-game weekend series early in period number one. T.J. Foster was sprung by a long stretch pass from Max Nicastro, and had an unimpeded route towards Joel Martin. Foster was able to slip a wrist shot over the stick-side of Martin, giving the Solar Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Late in the first period, Kalamazoo upped the pressure on the forecheck and were able to create an opportunity on a counter-attack. Justin Kovacs raced down a bouncing puck and spun a tape-to-tape feed to the back door where Alex Mallet was waiting to tap the puck into a wide open goal, equalizing the game.
Midway through the second period, the Solar Bears were able to re-establish their one-goal lead. Once again it was Foster who deposited the goal for Orlando after he received a drop pass along the crease of Martin and chopped the puck over the line.
While operating on a three-on-two break, Cory Pritz joined the rush from the back end and hauled in a pass along the right side. Pritz carried to the middle of the ice and fired a wrist shot that rang off the post, bounced off Orlando goalie, Rob Madore, and into the goal.
With the game tied at two, the Wings were able to create another odd-man rush towards Madore. Lane Scheidl's shot hit the outside pad of the Orlando goalie, leaving an open rebound for Justin Taylor to smash into the net.
With just two seconds remaining in regulation and Madore at the bench for an extra attacker, Patrick Watling dished a perfect feed to Rylan Schwartz, who bashed in the game-tying goal to force overtime.
Under a minute into overtime, the Wings were able to secure the game winner after Ludwig Blomstrand's initial try was saved by Madore, but Mallet was waiting to chip home the game winning goal, giving Kalamazoo a six point weekend against the Orlando Solar Bears.
