B.C. Lions News Release
The local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has named its BC Lions nominees for the Rogers CFL Player Awards.
Joe Smith was selected as the club's Outstanding Player. The second-year Lion has enjoyed an incredible season to date, holding down the CFL rushing lead with 1,385 yards, just 66 back from breaking the team record of 1,451 set in 1995. Smith set a new standard for the Lions with his 18th rushing touchdown last week and sits just one back of the CFL mark of 19. This is the first nomination for Smith.
Jason Clermont earns the selection as the Lions' Outstanding Canadian with his 71 receptions for 919 yards and six TD's. The rugged slot back out of Regina has been a season-long force making clutch catches at opportune times and is the team's second leading receiver. This is the second time Clermont has been nominated as the club's Outstanding Canadian after winning the award in 2005.
Rob Murphy gets his second nomination as the Lions' Outstanding Lineman, winning the award in 2006. Anchoring the line from his left tackle position, Murphy has helped lead the O-line to a league-low 23 sacks and a league-wide reputation as the CFL's premier blocking unit. Murphy was a unanimous selection.
Defensive lineman Cam Wake has been selected as the club's Outstanding Rookie and Outstanding Defensive Player. The first-year Lion has registered a league-leading 15 sacks, 68 defensive tackles, two TFL, three forced fumbles and three PKD's. Wake took the CFL by storm from Week 1 when he registered seven defensive tackles and three sacks versus Toronto and earned Rogers CFL Defensive Player of the Week honours.
Ian Smart takes home the nomination for Outstanding Special Teams Player while leading the CFL in both punt return and kickoff return yardage. Enjoying a fantastic second season, Smart has earned two Rogers CFL Special Teams Player of the Week awards (Aug. 10 v. Winnipeg, Sept. 15 v. Toronto ) as well as the Special Teams Player of the Month nod for August. Smart was also a unanimous selection.
The BC Lions final regular season home game is Saturday, November 3 at 7:00 pm versus the Calgary Stampeders at BC Place presented by BCLC. For more information on the BC Lions Football Club, please visit our web site at www.bclions.com.
