The Saskatchewan Roughrider nominees for the CFL awards were announced today. This year's nominees are: Kerry Joseph (Most Outstanding Player), Andy Fantuz (Outstanding Canadian), Jeremy O'Day (Outstanding Offensive Lineman), Fred Perry (Outstanding Defensive Player), John Chick (Outstanding Rookie) and Luca Congi (Outstanding Special Teams Player).
KERRY JOSEPH
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
First nomination as Riders Most Outstanding Player...has completed 260 of 441 passes for 3,910 yards (2nd in CFL)...has thrown 24 touchdowns while only throwing eight interceptions...has an efficiency rating of 98.7 (3rd in CFL)...leads the league in rushing yards by a quarterback with 687 and rushing touchdowns by a QB with 13...has been named CFL's Offensive Player of the Week three times this season...has started in all 16 regular season games...last Roughrider to win the award was Ron Lancaster in 1976.
ANDY FANTUZ
OUTSTANDING CANADIAN
First nomination as Roughriders Outstanding Canadian...has played in all 16 regular season games...has caught 54 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns...recorded the third highest single game receiving total in Rider history when he caught seven passes for 240 yards and three TD's in Hamilton...has been named Canadian Player of the Week three times this season and was the Canadian Player of the Month for September...the last Rider to win Outstanding Canadian was Ray Elgaard in 1992.
JEREMY O'DAY
OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
Second straight nomination as Outstanding Offensive Lineman...has started all 16 games at centre this season...anchors an offensive line that leads the league in average gain per rush...Teammate Gene Makowsky won this award in 2005 and 2006.
FRED PERRY
OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Second straight nomination as Outstanding Defensive Player...leads the team with eight quarterback sacks, 67 defensive tackles, nine tackles for losses and three fumble recoveries...has also recorded seven pass knockdowns...last Roughrider to win Outstanding Defensive Player was Jearld Baylis in 1993.
JOHN CHICK
OUTSTANDING ROOKIE
Has dressed in 11 regular season games this year at defensive end...has recorded 20 defensive tackles, a tackle for a loss and five quarterback sacks this season...last Roughrider to win Outstanding Rookie was Vince Goldsmith in 1981.
LUCA CONGI
OUTSTANDING SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER (JOHN AGRO AWARD)
Second straight nomination as top Special Teams Player...has dressed in all 16 games and is currently third in the CFL with 146 points...has been successful in 30 of 43 field goal attempts while connecting on all 51 of his converts...Corey Holmes won this award in 2002 and 2005.
