Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - Jermaine Mitchell had two triples and two RBIs, Matt Sulentic drove in three and Todd Johnson connected for three hits as the Kane County Cougars crushed the Beloit Snappers 11-1 on Thursday night at Pohlman Field. T
he Cougars tied a season-high with 15 hits and have a chance to win the series Friday in the finale.
The Cougars established a new season high for runs in an inning when they scored half a dozen in the first against Beloit's Adam Hawes.
Sulentic doubled with the bases loaded, Johnson brought him in with a bunt single, and Mike Affronti smashed a long two-run homer for an immediate 6-0 lead. Then Mitchell belted a two-run triple -- his first of two in the contest -- in the second, and Greg Dowling posted a sacrifice fly for a 9-0 rout.
Spot-starter Jason Fernandez baffled the Snappers over four one-hit innings and struck out four before giving way to Derrick Gordon (1-0), who lasted 3 1/3 innings, struck out a career-high five and gave up just one unearned run to pick up the win.
Dowling's RBI single in the sixth and a homer by Alex Valdez in the seventh completed the scoring. Newcomer Shane Presutti, who joined the team Thursday from extended spring training, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his Cougars debut.
The Cougars (15-38) and Snappers (3-5) conclude their five-game series Friday night at 6:30 CDT when Andrew Bailey (0-3, 3.50) faces Danny Vais (4-1, 3.51).
