West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
LANSING - The Lugnuts used a four run fifth inning to put away a 7-1 victory over the Whitecaps in game two of a doubleheader. Lansing swept the twin-bill after winning game one, 13-6.
As a result, the Lugnuts are a half game ahead of the Whitecaps in the Eastern Division First Half Wild Card race.
Josh Rainwater allowed three runs in four innings as the spot starter for the Whitecaps, in part due to four walks.
Lansing touched reliever Casey Fien for four runs in the fifth. Brian Pettway delivered the key hit of the inning, a two-run single that made the lead 5-0.
Chris Gutierrez put the Lugnuts on the board in the third with a two-run double.
West Michigan did not advance a runner beyond first base until the second inning when Brandon Timm and Deik Scram each doubled in the eighth to produce the âCaps only run of the second game.
Adrian Martin scattered five hits over six innings to earn the victory as the spot starter for Lansing.
Scott Campbell reached base in 7 of his 8 plate appearances in the two games combined. He walked four times and had three singles.
Game One: A nine run second inning put Lansing on top for good in a convincing 13-6 win over the Whitecaps in game one of a double header.
In the second, the Lugnuts became the first team this season to send more than nine batters to the plate in an innings against the Whitecaps when 14 batted.
Oddities of the inning included Sean Shoffit who made the second (strikeout) and third (pop to shortstop) outs of the inning at the plate. Eight Lugnuts batters in a row reached base at one point.
Jonah Nickerson started the game for the Whitecaps, but lasted just 1.2 innings. He allowed 10 runs on 8 hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Lauren Gagnier pitched the remainder of the game for West Michigan.
In the first inning, the Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Ryan Strieby. The first baseman finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. He also had a double.
Lansing scored two in the bottom of the first to tie on a two-run double by Matt Lane. He had four RBI in the game and finished 3-for-4.
Lane was 8-for-12 in a three game stretch against the Whitecaps.
Extra Curricular? Lansing pitching coach Tom Signore entered the seats immediately following the second game. He was arguing with a fan near the Whitecaps dugout.
Fifth On Friday: The last of five consecutive games between the Whitecaps and Lugnuts will be Friday at Oldsmobile Park. RHP Angel Castro (4-3, 2.05) is scheduled to be on the mound for West Michigan against Lansing RHP Chase Lirette (5-4, 4.58). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. The Davenport University Career Startup Show begins at 6:55 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
