Burlington Bees News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI -- The Burlington Bees made their lead just big enough as they held off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-4 Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Kurt Mertins had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Bees. Ryan Di Pietro and Chris Hayes scattered ten Rattler hits to combine on the victory.
Three straight doubles in the bottom of the first inning gave the Rattlers (16-36) a 2-0 lead. Kuo Hui Lo was first with the two-base hit. Leury Bonilla doubled in Lo with a drive off the wall in center. Carlos Peguero hit a ball to almost the same spot to knock in Bonilla.
But, the Bees (23-28) scored three times in the top of the third. Jase Turner singled in the first run. Later in the inning, Mertins lined a two-run single to left and the Bees had the lead. They would not give it up.
Burlington extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Michael Thompson knocked in a run with an RBI grounder. Joe Dickerson's two-out RBI single made it 5-2.
The Rattlers attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Liddi singled in a run with one out and runners at first and second to cut the Bee lead to 5-3. Di Pietro then walked Gerardo Avila to load the bases. That was all for Di Pietro as Hayes entered the game and got the final two outs of the inning to keep the Bees in front.
Di Pietro allowed three runs on seven hits over 5-1/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Rattlers threatened in the ninth. Peguero drove in Bonilla with a two-out single to get to within 5-4. But, Hayes got the final out for his second save of the season. Hayes pitched 3-2/3 innings, gave up four hits, and struck out three on the night.
The Rattlers and Bees conclude their series on Friday night. Kyle Parker (2-2, 1.38) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin. Burlington will send Everett Teaford (1-5, 5.73) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm. Stick around after the game on Friday night for the first fireworks display of the season.
