(Evansville, IN) - The Evansville Otters (54-34) edged the Florence Freedom (40-51) by scores of 3-1 and 4-3 in Friday's double header.
Jorge Marban (4-6) struck out a career-high 12 Otters in game one of the double header over five innings of work but suffered the loss. Evansville plated two runs in the second inning as Chris Sweeney homered to start the frame. One out later Phillip Wilson walked. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Josh Allen infield single. Another wild pitch allowed Wilson to score.
Marban only allowed the two runs on two hits over his five innings of work. He also walked four batters to go with the 12 strikeouts.
The Freedom's offense got shut down by Evansville starter Trevor Walch until the fifth. With one away Zak Blair drew a walk. With two away pinch hitter Rob Kelly singled to right. The Otters brought in Anthony Collazo who gave up a RBI single to Rolando Gomez. A passed ball moved the runners up 90 feet but Adam Taylor popped up to end the inning.
A J.R. Higley RBI single in the sixth gave the Otters an insurance run and Eric Massingham picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.
Florence took their only lead of the double header in the top of the first inning of game two. Cole Miles and Zak Blair reached on back-to-back walks. Sam Eberle lined out to right and a wild throw allowed Miles to advance to third. Buddy Sosnoskie hit into a fielder's choice to drive in Miles. An error allowed Sosnoskie to advance to second on the play. But he was left stranded when Ryan Solberg struck out to end the inning.
The lead was short-lived as Shayne Houck launched a three-run home run off Michael O'Neal (2-6) in the bottom of the first. A Sweeney RBI double in the fifth extended the Evansville lead to 4-1.
Florence was held hitless by Otters starter Preston Olson (9-3) until the sixth when Miles singled to start the frame. Two outs later Sosnoskie doubled him home to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Florence almost came all the way back against Massingham in the seventh. Gomez doubled to lead-off the inning. He stole third and scored when Adam Taylor reached second base on a throwing error. Gaby Juarbe bunted Taylor to third. But he was let stranded as Bryan Soloman grounded out and Miles popped out to end the game.
Florence will look to get their first win at Bosse Field in 2014 Saturday night as they send Chuck Weaver (6-6, 2.43 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. eastern time and all the action can be heard on http://mixlr.com/florencefreedom/.
