
Miners Push Past CornBelters for 2nd Straight Night

MARION, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, surrendered a big third inning for the second straight night and lost 7-5 to the Southern Illinois Miners on Saturday night at Rent One Park.
The Miners scored in the first frame for the second straight night against the Belters as Southern Illinois drew a walk to Ryan Cavan followed by a single by Niko Vasquez, with both scoring on a Frank Martinez base hit and a ground out by Aaron Gates for a 2-0 lead.
The CornBelters surged ahead 4-2 in the third on a two-run homer past the boundary fence in left field by Pat McKenna and a two-run double off the base of the left center field fence at the 392-foot mark by Richard Lucas.
Southern Illinois matched the Belters rally with four runs in their third inning, three of which were unearned, taking advantage of two walks and an error with RBIs from Martinez and a bases-loaded-and-clearing double to left center by Marquis Riley to put the hosts ahead 6-4.
The Belters cut the margin to 6-5 in the fifth inning when McKenna was issued a lead-off walk, moved to second on a single by Santiago Chirino then third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out by Sam Judah.
The Miners added a run in the eighth by converting a lead-off walk to Chris Burke into a run with a sacrifice bunt, a single and a sacrifice fly by Matt Jones.
Hunter Ackerman (5-3) earned the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief with two hits and two strikeouts. Cullen Babin (6-7) took the loss with six runs (three earned) on four hits with five walks, one hit batter and one strikeout. Derrick Miramontes pitched the ninth for his 20th save.
The Belters conclude the series in Marion with a 5:05 p.m. Sunday game. Normal sends right-hander Bobby Shore (4-6, 4.59 ERA) to the mound against Southern Illinois lefty Michael Carden (5-4, 3.73). The Belters take Monday off before concluding the regular season on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Schaumburg. Details can be found at the team web site, www.normalbaseball.com .
