Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- came from behind twice and defeated Frontier 9-8 in 11 innings on Saturday night.
Frontier struck first with a two-run homer from Joe Rapp in the top of the 1st inning against Andrew Busby. The Slammers got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly RBI from Adam Giacalone. Earlier in that inning Grant DeBruin doubled to move his hitting streak to 15 straight games, the team's longest of the season. In the bottom of the 4th against Freedom starter Brandon Rohde, JD Dorgan hit a line-drive 2-run home run to give the Slammers a 3-2 lead. It became 4-2 in the bottom of the 5th when Russell Moldenhauer doubled to drive in a run. It was Moldenhauer's first game in the lineup after missing 8 games with an ankle injury. Busby did a nice job after that 1st inning he scattered three hits over the next four scoreless innings. He got into trouble in the top of the 6th with a walk and a single allowed and was taken out of the game. Ethan Carter came on and Frank Florio singled to drive in a run and the score became 4-3. It stayed 4-3 until the top of the 8th inning when Frontier put four runs on the board to take a 7-4 lead. The inning featured two singles, a walk and two Joliet errors. The Slammers, however, responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the 8th to bring it back to 7-6, thanks to a Chris Epps 2-run double. Rapp ripped his second homer of the day in the top of the 9th and the solo shot made the Freedom lead 8-6. The Slammers would not give up however and scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 8-8. Adam Giacalone doubled in a run and then an Epps sac fly tied it up. David Kubiak came on in relief for Joliet and pitched the final two shutout innings to give him 13 2/3 straight scoreless innings of relief. He also picked up the win as Joliet pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 11th on a Josh Scheffert RBI single up the middle. The Slammers are now 15-15 in one-run games on the season and have now won 3 straight games overall. It was their 13th extra inning game of the summer.
In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $500 to lucky fan, Laurie Proctor, as part of their Amazing August/September promotion. Each home game the remainder of the season will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be.
