SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies (49-43) trailed 11-1 at the end of five innings Saturday night at GCS Ballpark, and ultimately fell to the Washington Wild Things by a final score of 11-4.

Gateway starting pitcher Daniel Cropper (6-9) struggled through three innings of work, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits.

The Grizzlies' offense was quiet against Wild Things' starter Matt Sergey (3-0), who threw the first perfect game in Frontier League history versus the Grizzlies last Sunday. Sergey lasted 5.2 innings and gave up two earned runs.

Washington's Carter Bell set the tone early, blasting a grand slam over the right field fence in the first inning. Washington (54-37) scored four more times in the third inning on a two-RBI single from Jose Dore, and then on a two-run double off the bat of Austin Wobrock.

The Grizzlies scored a run in the third after Wild Things' outfielder Andrew Heck bobbled a single by Madison Beaird, which allowed Michael Johnson to come all the way around to score from first base. Gateway tacked on runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

A bright spot for the Grizzlies was reliever Brett Mabry's performance out of the bullpen. Mabry tossed three scoreless innings, keeping Washington's run total at eleven.

With the loss, Gateway remains 2.5 games behind Lake Erie for a Frontier League playoff spot with four games remaining.

The Grizzlies and Wild Things play the final game of a three-game set on Sunday night, which is the final game at GCS Ballpark during the 2014 regular season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
