(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters (30-20) lost 3-0 against the Southern Illinois Miners on Friday night at Bosse Field.

All-star infielder Shayne Houck collected two hits in the loss as the Otters will now try to tie the series on Saturday night against the Miners

Rockport native Blake Monar took the ball for Evansville, making his second start in as many games. He worked around a jam to leave two men on base in the second as Southern Illinois pitcher Matt Bywater also stranded two in the bottom half of the inning.

Monar then ran into more of a jam in the fourth. He walked four men in the inning including catcher Phil Butler with the bases loaded to force in a run. Monar regrouped to strike out outfielder Matt Howard to end the inning but the walks piled up again in the fifth.

Ahead 1-0, Southern Illinois worked two walks to begin the next inning. Outfielder Jay Austin and infielder Frank Martinez both moved to third on a hit by pitch to Aaron Gates and scored on a two-run single from first baseman Chris Burke.

Down 3-0, Evansville would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh but reliever James Bierlein induced a fielder's choice against shortstop Phillip Wilson to end the inning. The Otters also left a runner on base in the eighth and ninth innings as Southern Illinois held on for the 3-0 series opening win.

Monar (0-1) takes the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He also had six walks and seven strikeouts in the game. Reliever Evan Mott pitched two hitless innings in relief. Pitchers Brandon Shimo and Jose Velez both also threw a scoreless frame each in the defeat.

Game two of the series is Saturday night at Bosse Field. Evansville will have righty Preston Olson (3-3, 2.72 ERA) on the hill against Southern Illinois lefty Michael Carden (1-3, 3.53 ERA).
