Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners continued their winning ways on Friday night in Evansville, beating the Otters 3-0 at Bosse Field to win their fifth game in a row and first after the All-Star break. For Miners manager Mike Pinto, the win also puts him one away from reaching 500 wins for his managerial career.

In a game dominated by pitching, the Miners got Evansville starter Blake Monar (1-2) to crack in the fourth inning. After allowing just one baserunner and fanning five Miners in the first three innings, Southern Illinois drew four walks off of the southpaw, including a bases-loaded free pass drawn by Phil Butler, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

That lead would widen to 3-0 on one swing in the fifth inning, when Jay Austin and Frank Martinez drew two more walks to lead off the frame. After a flyout and a strikeout, Aaron Gates was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Burke then grounded a base hit that just got past the diving shortstop into left for a two-run single and a 3-0 Miners lead.

Matt Bywater (6-1) did the rest, as the lefty and reigning Frontier League Pitcher of the Week won his fifth straight decison with six and two-thirds innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out five. Derrick Miramontes worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his 12th save.

Burke ended up 2-for-2 with two walks to lead the Miners offensively. Shayne Houck led Evansville with a 2-for-4 day in a game but the Otters got just two other hits in the contest in a game where neither team managed a single extra-base hit.

The Miners will go for their sixth win in a row on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m., throwing Michael Carden against the Otters' Preston Olson.
