Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA - After taking a hiatus from play for the Frontier League All-Star Break, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, returned to their winning ways as they defeated the River City Rascals in game one of their three-game series by a final score of 6-1. Scott Dunn threw six scoreless innings en route to his fourth victory of the year, while River City starter Tommy Mendoza suffered the loss.

Before the game began, however, big news came out of the Washington executive office, as right fielder and team leader Stewart Ijames' contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Before his departure, Ijames led Washington at the plate with a .319 batting average and led the entire Frontier League with 15 home runs.

After saying their goodbyes, the Wild Things came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning when left fielder CJ Beatty smacked a single into the outfield turf to give Washington their first hit of the contest. Beatty plated shortly after thanks to a double from right fielder Scott Kalamar.

Washington added two more runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-0 ballgame when first baseman Connor Lewis and catcher Jim Vahalik scored thanks to a line drive into right field from shortstop Garrett Rau.

On the mound, Dunn worked his magic and kept the Rascals at bay, striking out two River City batters and allowing just four hits through six innings. His lone blunder was a hit batsman in the top of the second inning.

Washington increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom half of the sixth when third baseman Carter Bell reached home on a passed ball. Second baseman Sam Montgomery followed suit, scoring on a River City balk on the very next pitch.

A Rascals throwing error in the bottom of the seventh allowed center fielder Daniel Poma to come across and give the Wild Things a 6-0 lead. The shutout was broken up in the top of the eighth inning when River City third baseman Tyler Zupcic plated off of a sacrifice by designated hitter Josh Ludy. The comeback was short lived, however, as Washington was able to hold on to their lead, giving them their 33rd victory on the season.

River City and Washington will go head-to-head yet again in game two of their three-game series on Saturday, July 19. Saturday's game also marks the Wild Thing's Breast Cancer Awareness Night when they look to raise funds and bring Breast Cancer Awareness to CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets call (724) 250-9555, stop by the box office, or visit online at www.washingtonwildthings.com.
