CornBelters Begin Home Stand with Loss to Greys

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, lost their third straight contest and first of the season against the Frontier Greys, 7-4 on Friday night at the Corn Crib.

The Greys plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to open the scoring when Joe Rapp and Michael Vaughn led off with singles and were balked to second and third, scoring on a Jon Minucci ground out and a base hit to right by Frank Florio for a 2-0 lead.

The Belters surged in front in the fifth inning as Sam Judah by getting on base with a line drive that took the glove off of Greys pitcher Brandon Rohde, followed by a single by Aaron Dudley with both coming home on a home run down the left field line by Richard Lucas for a 3-2 Normal advantage.

The Greys evened the contest at 3-3 in the sixth when Vaughn led off with a single, went to second on a Minucci hit and came home on a two-out liner to right by Zach Tanner.

The guests took a 6-3 lead in the seventh when two one-out walks came around to score on a hard ground out by Rapp off the leg of reliever Charley Short followed by a Vaughn double and a Minucci single. The margin became 7-3 in the eighth as a lead-off walk came around to score on a Cameron Monger base hit.

The Belters scored the final run in the seventh on a two-out rally as Ozney Guillen came home on a single by Jhiomar Veras.

Brandon Rohde (5-2) worked eight innings for the win while Short (5-1) took the loss with one inning of relief. Cameron Lamb pitched the ninth inning for his eighth save.

The series continues Saturday at 7 p.m. as the CornBelters send right-hander Kurt Schluter (0-0, 3.00 ERA) to the hill for his first start while the Greys counter with righty Clint Wright (3-5, 5.54). The game can be heard at www.normalbaseball.com beginning at 6:50. State Farm Saturday allows employees, agents and policy holders of State Farm to buy half-price box seats for $6. The series concludes on Sunday followed by a Monday off and a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the Washington Wild Things as part of a home stand that continues through next Saturday.
