Evansville Otters News Release

Evansville, IN - History did not repeat itself as the Otters could not complete a ninth inning comeback and fell 5-2 to the Washington Wild Things Friday night at Bosse Field.

On Sunday, the final game before the all-star break, the Otters overcame a 5-1 ninth inning deficit in Washington to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Otters won 6-5 in 10 innings on a bases loaded walk.

Five days later is was not to be though, as the Otters again trailed 5-1 entering the ninth and again mounted a rally. Josh Howard walked to load the bases with one out, forcing Wild Things manager Mark Mason to bring in All-Star closer Nick Peterson. Peterson got Eric Blackwell to pop out to second base, but hit the next batter, Javier Brown, to force in a run. Brown then represented the tying run on first base, and Dustin Koca the game-winning run at the plate. Peterson induced a groundball to first base though, and Ernie Banks stepped on the bag himself to end the game.

The Otters first run of the game came in the fifth inning on a Blackwell double off the left field wall that scored Andre Liscinsky from first base.

The Wild Things surged out to a 5-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Brett Grandstrand in the second, an RBI double by Phil Laurent and a two-run homer by Ernie Banks in the third, and a bases loaded walk to Jacob Dempsey in the fifth.

Wild Things starter Andy Schindling (2-0) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing only one unearned run on four hits.

Otters' starter Rashad Ford (3-4) began the night strong, recording three strikeouts while retiring the first five batters. He struggled from that point on though, officially lasting only four innings. He pitched to the first four batters of the fifth inning, but did not record an out while walking all four. Reliever Kyle Dahman came on to inherit the bases loaded, no one out jam, and proceeded to strike out the side. In three innings of relief the only blemish on Dahman's line was a walk in the seventh inning.

The Otters (16-33) and Wild Things (22-27) hook up again Saturday at 7:05pm CDT.
