O'FALLON, MO - Four home runs helped the River City Rascals beat the Midwest Sliders 10-4 Saturday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Sliders couldn't capitalize with scoring opportunities as River City took advantages of their chances.
"When you have runners on second and third with no outs, they have to score," said Sliders manager Eric Coleman. "We didn't execute tonight."
Zack Pace started the game by hitting a double down the right field line. He stole third base, and then scored on a RBI single by Jimmy Baker.
The Rascals came back and scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Chris Colton two-run homer.
The Sliders started the second inning the same way as they began the first, Gil Zayas hit a leadoff double. Zayas later scored on a groundout by Jonnie Knoble. Jimmy Baker tied the game in the third on a solo shot, making the score 3-3.
Baker walked, and Robbie Knapped single to start the sixth. A throwing error advanced both runner to scoring position. Rascals' starter Jake Laber then struck out the next three batters in order, wasting a key Sliders' scoring opportunity with a tie game.
Chad Maddox hit a three-run bomb in the sixth, followed by Scott Robinson solo home run making the score 7-3 Rascals.
Baker hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh scoring Ben Barrone and cutting the River City lead to three.
Two more runs came home for the Rascals off one hit, and an error in the seventh. Colton hit another homer in the eight making the score 10-4.
James Albury suffered only his second loss of the season, allowing six runs, in five plus innings of work.
Sunday night's rubber match will feature Kyle Kearcher (1-6, 5.11) for Midwest against Daniel Howard (3-3, 4.86). First pitch will be at 7:01 p.m. EST. Directly following the game the Sliders will travel to Gateway to play the Grizzlies next week.
