MARION, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners scored five unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings and held on to take the first two games of the series against the Florence Freedom, winning 6-3 Saturday night at Rent One Park.

Jordan Towns (1-3) made his first start of the season for the Freedom and failed to get through the fifth inning. Towns gave up a lead-off home run to Joey Metropoulos in the second inning to open up the game's scoring.

Erold Andrus took advantage of two Miners errors in the top of the third and drove in Matt Stiffler to tie the game at one.

Southern Illinois then jumped back on top, this time for good in the fourth inning. Towns didn't do himself any favors as he walked the first two men of the inning and both scored on RBI singles from Andrew Sweet and Pedro Lopez.

Leading 3-1, the Miners put up another crooked number in the fifth, a three spot made it 6-1.

Stiffler went 3-4 for the Freedom and cut the lead to four with an RBI single off Miner reliever Alex Rollin in the seventh. Billy Mottram made it 6-3 with an RBI double the next inning off Rollin.

The Miners turned to Mike Damchuck for the second straight night and the right-hander got the final five outs of the ballgame to preserve the win and pick up his third save of the season.

Joe Augustine (3-3) picked up his second straight win against the Freedom going six innings, allowing only the one unearned run in the third inning. As a staff the Miners did not walk a batter all game.

Florence (23-26) and Southern Illinois (28-22) concluded their season series Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. from Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois. The loss marks the Freedom sixth consecutive away from Champion Window Field. Catch the Freedom while they are on the road on 106.7 FM or 1067WNKR.com.
