May 26, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Shane Opitz doubled and hit his second home run of the season, but the Fisher Cats dropped their third straight with a 10-1 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils on Tuesday night. Opitz pushed his hitting streak to eight games as the Fisher Cats (22-23) fell to 2-3 on the seven-game homestand.
Reading (24-20) took advantage of some sloppy Fisher Cats defense to jump out to an early lead. With two outs in the second, Brian Pointer singled before Brodie Greene reached on an error. The next hitter, Rene Garcia, lofted a fly ball to shallow right that was dropped by Opitz to allow two runs to score.
Opitz tried to make amends in the bottom of the inning when he doubled to left field with one out. He attempted to score from second on a single by Christian Lopes, but was thrown out at home plate.
Reading added a third run against starter Joel Pineiro (L; 0-2) in the third before Opitz clawed the Fisher Cats back in the fourth. With two outs in the inning, Opitz blasted a long home run to right-center, cutting their deficit to 3-1.
That's how the score stayed until the sixth when Reading tacked on three more runs against Pineiro. In the seventh, a three-run homer by Cam Perkins made it 9-1 against new Fisher Cat Jimmy Cordero.
Opitz finished the night 2-4, and has now his safely in a season-high eight in a row. He is hitting .464 on the streak (13-28) with four doubles. He is 10-19 on the homestand.
Reading added one more run in the eighth on a two-out double by Perkins. Perkins finished 3-5 with four RBI while Brock Stassi had four hits for the Phils.
After winning the first two games of the homestand, the Fisher Cats have lost three straight. They have allowed 30 runs and 51 hits over the three losses.
The series continues on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Coca-Cola hat. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling 603-641-2005, or by visiting the box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Lefty John Anderson will try to stop the bleeding for the Fisher Cats on Tuesday night against Reading righty Zach Eflin. Radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
