
Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced for May 18-24

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 18th through May 24th:
Erie SeaWolves outfielder Wynton Bernard has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 18th-May 24th. The 24-year old hit .462 (12-for-26) with five doubles, one home run, seven runs scored, five RBIs, one steal, one walk and a .769 slugging percentage in six games for the SeaWolves last week. Bernard, who is a native of San Diego, California, had at least one hit in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including kicking off his week by going 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored in Erie's 10-6 win against Richmond last Monday night. The 6'2", 195 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in hits (12), extra-base hits (6), total bases (20) and doubles (5) last week and tied for the lead in runs scored (7). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in slugging percentage (.769-2nd), OPS (1.251-2nd), batting average (.462-tied 2nd), on-base percentage (.481-3rd), home runs (1-tied 5th) and RBI (5-tied 6th). Wynton, who is currently ranked third in the league in hits (51) and fifth in batting average (.323), was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league free agent on March 3, 2014. He was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 35th round of the 2012 draft out of Niagara University.
Richard Bleier, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Harrisburg Senators, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 18th-May 24th. The 6'3", 215 lb. hurler started one game for the Senators last week and posted a record of 1-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Bleier, who is a native of Davie, Florida, made his lone appearance of the week on Friday night against the visiting New Britain Rock Cats and fired eight shutout innings in Harrisburg's 1-0 victory. He gave up just two hits while striking out seven batters and walking one. With his performance last week Richard improved his record to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.48 in five games, four starts, for the Senators this season. The 28-year old finished tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in wins (1-tied 3rd), WHIP (0.38-4th), batting average against (.074-5th) and strikeouts (7-tied 6th). Richard was signed by the Washington Nationals as a minor league free agent on December 13, 2014. He was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round of the 2008 draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University and also spent one season in the Toronto organization after being selected during the minor league phase of the 2013 Rule 5 Draft.
