Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Florida Marlins announced Sunday that RHP Jacob Marcaeux had been placed on the Greensboro Grasshopper roster from the Jamestown Jammers. LHP pitcher Taylor Tankersley has been transferred to the Jupiter Hammerheads in Jupiter, FL from Greensboro, NC.

A 2005 first-year draft pick, Marcaeux is 3-5 with a 5.55 ERA while with Jamestown. In ten games played he has allowed 56 hits and 33 runs in 47.0 innings pitched.

Prior to the draft, Marcaeux received little exposure as he was home schooled until his senior year in high school in 2002. While attending McNeese State he compiled a 5.20 ERA, and spent most of his time in the bullpen. Last summer Marcaeux pitched in the Texas Collegiate League under the direction of former all-star closer Mike Henneman. Henneman taught him a mid-80s slider and a mid-70s spike curveball. The 21-year old's fastball also took a step forward as he pitched at 93-95 with good sinking life.

Marcauex pulled a ribcage muscle in mid-March so some scouts projected him as a reliever, although all ten games played for Jamestown have come in the starting role. In his most recent start, he pitched 7.0 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Another first round draft pick with the Marlins (27th overall), Taylor Tankersley, has been moved to Jupiter, FL to pitch for the class High-A Jupiter Hammerheads. While he played for the Grasshoppers, he was 2-7 with a 5.18 ERA. In 66.0 innings pitched, he struck out 63 batters and walked 25.

A native of Vicksburg, MISS, Tankersley went to college at the University of Alabama. A son of a nuclear physicist, he gets his sporting genes from his paternal grandfather, Earl Tankersley who pitched briefly in the early age. His best pitch is a plus-slider and his fastball usually ranges from 90-93 mph. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot making him particularly tough on left-handed hitters. Although he could get to the majors quicker as a reliever, the Marlins are projected to leave him in the starting rotation so he can develop fully.

In 2004 with Jamestown, Tankersley was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six games played. He is ranked as the seventh best prospect in the Florida Marlins organization by Baseball America.
