Iowa Cubs News Release

Omaha, NE - Brian Bocock's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Omaha Storm Chasers (48-44) to a 7-6 win over the Iowa Cubs (48-43) at Werner Park on Tuesday night. The Cubs lost leads of 3-1 and 6-4 in the defeat. The Cubs are 1-4 on this road trip and the team's lead in the Pacific Coast League's American Northern Division has been trimmed to a half-game over the Storm Chasers.

The Storm Chasers grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Paulo Orlando. The Cubs answered quickly with three runs in the top of the second. With two outs, Ryan Kalish doubled and scored when Carlos Peguero mishandled Matt Szczur's single in left field for an error. Brett Jackson followed with a two-run homer off Omaha starter Aaron Brooks to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead. Jackson has two home runs and eight RBI in four games against the Storm Chasers this season.

The Storm Chasers battled back against Cubs' starter Dae-Eun Rhee, who was making his triple-A debut. Bocock led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple and scored on another two-out hit by Orlando. The Storm Chasers took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Whit Merrifield drove in the trying run with a base hit. After a double play, Johnny Giavotella tripled to the gap in right-center to drive in Paul Janish with the go-ahead run.

Alberto Cabrera followed Rhee to the mound and pitched three scoreless innings in relief to keep the Cubs in the game. In his last seven games Cabrera has allowed just one run in 13.1 innings with 15 strikeouts.

The Cubs regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, reliever Chris Dwyer walked two men in front of Kalish, who smacked a three-run homer onto the berm in right field to put the Cubs up 6-4. It was Kalish's second home run in three days and both have come against a left-handed pitcher.

Marcus Hatley came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth. The Storm Chasers loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles. Matt Fields hit a ground ball to second base. Logan Watkins flipped to Javy Baez at second base for a force out and Baez threw back to first. The throw was in time to complete the double play, but Josh Vitters missed the catch for an error. Two men scored to tie the game. One run was unearned after Hatley got a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, two singles around a strikeout put the potential winning run at third base. After an intentional walk to Merrifield, Bocock lined the game-winning hit to left. Hatley (2-3) was charged with his second blown save and the loss. Tim Collins (1-1) pitched the final 1.1 innings for Omaha and was credited with the win.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers play game three of this series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05. LH Eric Jokisch (5-8, 4.12) will start for the Cubs against LH John Lamb (4-8, 4.23) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 11:45.
