Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (48-45) could not claim first place the American Northern Division as the Iowa Cubs (49-43) outlasted them in a 2-1 loss in 14 innings. It was the second longest game in Werner Park history, as the Storm Chasers played a 16-inning game in April of 2012.
The Storm Chasers pitching staff put forth an extraordinary effort in a losing effort, beginning with starter John Lamb who struck out a career high 11 in a no decision and gave up only one unearned run in his seven innings of work. The 11 punch-outs were tied for the most by a Storm Chaser this season, as Bruce Chen totaled that many in a rehab start in early June. The 19 total strikeouts for Omaha was tied for their most in a PCL game as far back as 1999, originally set in July of last season in a 12-inning game.
Starting with Lamb's final three innings of work, the Storm Chasers proceeded to not allow a hit over the next 10.1 innings before a home run by Logan Watkins with two outs in the 14th broke up the tie. In the three games against Iowa at Werner Park this year, the Omaha bullpen has only allowed two hits in 15.0 innings (both however are home runs).
Matt Fields got Lamb off the hook for a tough luck loss as he smashed a dead centerfield blast to lead off the seventh. It was his team-leading 16th homer of the season and his 51st RBI which also is most on Omaha. The Storm Chasers squandered all their other scoring opportunities in the game, as they went a combined 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position on the day.
Omaha will look to rebound in the series finale, as they send out LHP Buddy Baumann (1-1, 1.55 ERA) for a second consecutive start in their final home game before the All-Star Break. He will face off with I-Cubs RHP Carlos Pimentel (1-4, 4.84 ERA), with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
