Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - After being defeated on two walk-off hits last week at Des Moines, the Omaha Storm Chasers (48-44) gave the Iowa Cubs (48-43) a taste of their own medicine with a 7-6 comeback win on a Brian Bocock walk-off single in the ninth. The win pulls Omaha to with 0.5 games of the first place I-Cubs.
The Chasers entered the eighth inning trailing 6-4, but led off the inning with three straight singles and scored the two tying runs on a botched double play by Iowa. In the ninth inning, Francisco Pena led off with a broken bat single and then went first to third on a Paul Janish single two batters later. After an intentional walk to the hot-hitting Whit Merrifield, who had three hits in the game, Brian Bocock fought off a 1-2 pitch to the gap in left center for his third hit which sealed Omaha's fourth walk-off win this season.
Bocock and Merrifield led six Storm Chasers who collected a multi-hit game in the win. Merrifield has 13 games with multiple hits out of his first 29 at the Triple-A level, and has 23 hits in his last 12 games (which includes a current nine-game hitting streak). Merrifield has 35 hits in his 19 starts in the leadoff spot this season (.417 average), and has a hit in 21 of his last 23 games. Paulo Orlando drove in two runs on the night, and has a team-leading 105 hits on the season which ranks second in the PCL.
The Storm Chasers have erased deficits in 25 of their 47 wins this season, and three of their four wins against the Cubs in 2014 have been in come-from-behind fashion. The win also improves Omaha to 12-2 in starts by Aaron Brooks, who went five innings allowing three runs and retired his final eight batters on the night. The bullpen did not allow a hit over the final 3.2 innings to set up the comeback.
Omaha will look to overtake the Cubs for the division lead in a day game tomorrow, as they send out LHP John Lamb (4-8, 4.23 ERA). He will face off with fellow southpaw LHP Eric Jokisch (5-8, 4.12 ERA) with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
