Iowa Cubs News Release

Omaha, NE - The Iowa Cubs' (49-43) only hit in the last 10 innings of Wednesday's game was a solo home run by Logan Watkins in the top of the 14th that gave the team a 2-1 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers (48-45) at Werner Park. In Iowa's longest game of the season, the teams combined for three runs, 13 hits, and 39 strikeouts. The Storm Chasers lead this series 2-1, but the Cubs lead the season series 7-4.

The Cubs took advantage of an error to score the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Carlos Peguero dropped a fly ball off the bat of Chris Valaika to begin the frame and Josh Vitters drove him in Valaika with a one-out double to left-center. Javy Baez added a double in the third inning and Manny Ramirez singled in the fourth. The Cubs didn't record another hit until the Watkins homer. The only other baserunner was a walk to Matt Szczur in the 11th. Storm Chasers' starter John Lamb worked seven innings and struck out 11. Casey Coleman and Louis Coleman each pitched a scoreless inning and Wilking Rodriguez fanned three over two scoreless frames. Ramon Troncoso (1-6) pitched the final three innings for Omaha and suffered the loss after giving up the homer. He struck out four as the Storm Chasers fanned 19 Cubs in the game.

Cubs' starter Eric Jokisch allowed just two hits through six shutout innings before Matt Fields led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to tie the game. Jokisch struck out the next three men to finish with a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven innings and record his 11th quality start of the season.

The Storm Chasers had two men on with no outs in the eighth, but Armando Rivero struck out Whit Merrifield and got Brian Bocock to ground into a double play to end the threat. Rivero allowed two base runners on a walk and a hit in the ninth, but Marcos Mateo came in to get the final out and force extra innings. Mateo gave up a hit and a walk in the 10th, but didn't surrender a run.

LH Michael Heesch, who joined the team today from single-A Kane County, took over in the 11th and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in his triple-A debut to keep the Cubs in the game. He allowed one hit and two walks (one intentional) and struck out four. After Heesch struck out Jimmy Paredes to start the bottom of the 14th inning, the Cubs turned to LH Zac Rosscup. Rosscup allowed a walk and a two-out hit to Merrifield before getting Bocock to fly out to left to end the game and earned his third save of the season. Heesch (1-0) was credited with the win. The Cubs struck out 20 batters, one shy of a franchise record.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers will wrap up this series on Thursday night at 7:05. RH Carlos Pimentel (1-5, 4.84) will start for the Cubs against LH Buddy Baumann (1-1, 1.55) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
