ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, have announced that goaltender Jussi Olkinuora has been assigned to the club from the St. John's IceCaps by Winnipeg.
Olkinuora, 23, has started one game for the IceCaps this season. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound netminder joins the Reign after appearing in 27 games for Ontario last year in his rookie season. The goaltender posted a 14-11-1 record and one shutout with a 3.01 goals-against average and .887 save percentage. The Helsinki, Finland native also appeared in nine games with St. John's.
In 2012-13, Olkinuora made his professional debut with the IceCaps, appearing in one game.
Prior to turning pro, Olkinuora spent two seasons from 2011-13 at the University of Denver where he compiled a 21-14-8 record, along with a 2.27 goals-against average and .926 save percentage plus five shutouts. He also spent a season in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux Falls Stampede, sporting a 14-13-0 record, 2.78 goals-against average and .900 save percentage.
Olkinuora will join the rest of the Reign roster in Anchorage, Alaska, as the team opens its 2014-15 ECHL regular season schedule with three road games against the Alaska Aces this weekend. Olkinuora will wear number 31.
