HEADLINES: RedHawks comeback for win over Iowa ... Brewer with 2 doubles ... Corey closes the door (again)
TODAY'S OPPONENT: The Iowa Cubs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. Last year, the Cubs were 64-75 and finished fourth in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.
TODAY'S GAME: The RedHawks complete their eight-game homestand against Iowa. The RedHawks are on a stretch where they will play 24 of 32 games on the road from May 18-June 18. This is their 59th game this season, 31st home game and fourth game against Iowa. They start a 12-game road trip Thursday that will take them to Omaha, Memphis and Nashville . They return home June 21 for an eight-game homestand against New Orleans and Round Rock.
LAST GAME: Oklahoma scored two runs in the seventh inning to beat Iowa 3-2. After two innings, the RedHawks trailed 2-0 and had been out-hit 3-0. However, in innings three through nine, they out-scored the Cubs 3-0 and out-hit them 10-0. RedHawks pitchers faced the minimum over the last 7.1 innings and gave up only one walk over that span. Jace Brewer was three-for-four with two doubles to lead the RedHawks offensively. Starting pitcher Edinson Volquez went six innings and gave up two runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts. The bullpen did not allow a baserunner over three innings.
VS. IOWA: The RedHawks are 45-52 all-time against Iowa since the two teams joined the PCL in 1998. The RedHawks are 24-25 against Iowa at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Last year was the RedHawks first season series win over the Cubs since 2001 when they won five of eight against them.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Starting pitcher Nick Masset makes his fourth start for the RedHawks this season. He earned the win in his last start June 1 vs. Albuquerque, a 6-4 RedHawk victory. He went six innings and gave up two runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. It was his first win in Triple-A. Tulsa native Les Walrond starts for Iowa. Walrond started against Oklahoma twice last year with Albuquerque. He was 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA (5 ER/11.2 IP) with five walks and seven strikeouts against Oklahoma in 2005.
STREAKERS: Shortstop Joaquin Arias is on a seven-game hitting streak dating back to May 30. He is 11-for-28 (.393) with a home run and two RBIs during the streak, raising his average from .258 to .275 (17 rise). Relief pitcher Bryan Corey has not allowed an earned run in his last seven outings (8.2 IP). He has six saves, 11 strikeouts and has allowed three hits and one walk in his last seven games.
STARTING PITCHERS: In the last eight games, Oklahoma starters have three wins. They have given up 13 runs, 11 earned over 46 innings ( 2.15 ERA) with 26 walks and 44 strikeouts.
WILL SMITH: In his last 10 games, outfielder Will Smith is 14-for-39 (.358) with four doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. He has raised his average from .258 to .295 (27 rise) in the last 10 games. He has five two-hit games in his last 10 and was two-for-four with a homer and three RBIs May 23 at Colorado Springs.
ERRORS: The RedHawks have not committed an error in their last five games and have committed only one error in the first seven games of this homestand. They committed 13 errors during their 12-game road trip May 18-29.
HOME SWEET HOME: Going back to July 22 of last season, the RedHawks are 39-16 (.709) at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark including 1-1 in last year's playoffs against Nashville. They are 38-15 (.717) at home in regular season games since July 22.
CLOSE GAMES: Twenty-one of Oklahoma's 27 wins this season have come by four runs or less, including 13 one-run wins. Also, 23 of Oklahoma's 31 losses this season have come by four runs or less. They have nine losses by one run, seven losses by two runs, four losses by three runs and three losses by four runs.
RADIO UPDATE: The RedHawks' flagship station for most games is KEBC 1340 AM. However, there are a few dates the flagship station will change due to scheduling conflicts. The RedHawks will be on AM 1000 KTOK June 10. They will be on KFXY 1640 The Score June 11.
DOT-DOT-DOTS: The Rangers selected 18 year-old left-handed pitcher Kasey Kiker from Russell County (AL) HS in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft today ... The RedHawks last nine games have been decided by three runs or less, including six one-run games. The RedHawks are 7-2 overall and 5-1 in one-run games in their last nine games ... Catcher Nick Trzesniak leads all PCL catcher in fielding percentage at .996 ... The RedHawks have not hit a home run in the first three games of their series with Iowa ... Relief pitcher Wes Littleton has stranded five inherited runners (none allowed) in his first four outings as a RedHawks.
