Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Cesar Carrillo (kuh-REE-o), the top-rated prospect of the San Diego Padres, will get his first Triple-A start tonight for the Portland Beavers as they take on the Tucson Sidewinders at Tucson Electric Park.
Carrillo, 22, was transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile on May 19, but has yet to pitch for the Beavers; he went on the disabled list with a strained right forearm flexor on May 29 (retroactive to May 25).
A first-round draft pick (18th overall) of the Padres in 2005, Carrillo, ranked among the top 100 prospects in Minor League Baseball by Baseball America, split his rookie 2005 season between Class A Lake Elsinore and Mobile, combining for a 5-2 record and a 4.95 ERA in 12 starts.
In nine starts with Mobile to start the 2006 season, the second-year professional was 1-3 with a 3.02 ERA (17er, 50.2ip) and 43 strikeouts.
The former University of Miami star has a 6-5 record with a 4.04 ERA in 21 professional starts.
With Carrillo coming off the disabled list today, the Beavers' active roster is at its 24-man limit.
