Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies did not appear to have a problem scoring off reigning AL Cy Young winner, but it was Salt Lake's bullpen that shut the Grizzlies down to hold onto a 3-2 win to take the series Tuesday afternoon at Grizzlies Stadium.
Angels RHP Bartolo Colon made his first rehab start since 2000, lasting 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks on 82 pitches. Fresno shortstop Jose Flores welcomed Colon to Grizzlies Stadium in the first inning with a home-run blast to left field.
The Grizzlies also picked up a run in the third when Daniel Ortmeier tripled to right field off Colon and scored on Chad Santos' groundout to first base.
Salt Lake scored the winning run in the fifth inning on first baseman Mike Eylward's RBI single off Fresno starter Michael Tejera to score Howie Kendrick to give the Bees a 3-2 lead.
The Grizzlies had several opportunities to tie or regain the lead in the last three innings, but came up short, leaving 10 base runners on and going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The best chance came in the seventh inning when the Bees loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Jason Bulger struck out Ortmeier and Todd Linden to end the threat.
Juan Melo doubled with two outs in the eighth, but was left on when Jed Hansen went down on strikes. The last chance for the Grizzlies came on Fred Lewis' one-out double to right field in the ninth. Salt Lake reliever Greg Jones struck out Flores for the second out and got Ortmeier to ground out to first to end the game as the Bees take three of four from Fresno.
Nathan Bland (2-2) picked up the win since Colon did not pitch enough innings to be eligible for the win. Tejera (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.
The Grizzlies finish their fourth homestand of the year and will go on the road for a 12-day trip starting with four games against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Thursday at 6:05 p.m.
