Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
JUNE 6, 2006, 7:05 p.m. : OMAHA ROYALS (24-34) @ Round Rock Express (32-24)
HOME: 16-15 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 8-19 (37-35 in '05) vs. Round Rock: 2-8 (10-6 in '05)
TONIGHT: The Royals face the Round Rock Express in a 7:05 p.m. game at The Dell Diamond. It's the final game of the series, which Round Rock leads 2-1. Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Paul Phillips drove in 3 runs and Luke Hudson hurled 5.1 innings of 1-run relief as the Royals snapped a 7-game road losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Express. With the Royals trailing 3-2 in the 7th, Phillips' 2-run single off Joe Valentine (1-2) proved to be the decisive hit. It also made a winner of Hudson (2-0), who had been on the hook for a loss. Joe Nelson pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his 3rd save.
ROYALS REPORT: The run surrendered by Hudson in the 5th ended his streak without allowing an earned run at 12.0 innings. The right-hander has given up that lone run over his last 16.0 innings for a 0.56 ERA, lowering his ERA with Omaha this season to 1.25. *** Phillips' 3 RBI last night give him 7 RBI in his past 4 games. The Royals catcher knocked in 4 runs last Friday to lead Omaha to a 5-1 victory over New Orleans. *** Chad Allen went 1-for-3 last night, with his 2nd inning double running his hitting streak to 12 games. He's hitting .438 (21-48) during the streak, which was interrupted at 10 straight while he missed 11 contests with a sore hamstring. The streak surpasses Mark Teahen's 11-gamer as the longest for a Royal this season. Allen is hitting .332 on the year, tied for 8th in the PCL. *** Mike Aviles had his string of 7 straight games with 1 hit halted last night, as he was 0-for-4. *** Aaron Guiel was ejected from last night's game after arguing a called strike in a 3rd inning at-bat. Guiel had struck out swinging in the 1st inning after taking a 3-1 pitch, which was called a strike as he started towards 1st base. Guiel is 1-for-11 in 5 games since coming back from KC, but has coaxed 4 walks and 2 HBP's.. *** Former Longhorn star J.P. Howell made his 1st start last night since facing Round Rock on April 30. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits over 2.2 innings, surrendering just his 3rd home run this season to Charlton Jimerson. *** Andres Blanco, who had been called up to KC on May 19, returned to Omaha's lineup last night. He reached base twice - on a single and a hit by pitch - and scored both times. *** Reliever Leo Nunez, who was called up to KC from Wichita earlier this season, was called up from Omaha yesterday. In 2 Triple-A outings, Nunez was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 1 save. To make roster space for Nunez, KC optioned right-hander Seth Etherton to Omaha. Etherton, expected to join the Royals in Omaha later this week, was 1-1 with a 9.39 ERA in 2 starts for KC since being acquired last week in a trade with the Padres. Lefty Eddie Yarnall, who has not pitched since May 21 due to a stiff back, has been activated from Omaha's DL. *** Alex Gordon, KC's 1st round pick (2nd overall) in 2005 out of Nebraska, is among 6 Wichita players named to the Texas League All-Star Game. Gordon is hitting .306 with 9 homers and 27 RBI in 54 games at Double-A. *** With the 1st overall pick in the 2006 draft today, KC selected 22-year old right-hander Luke Hochevar. The 1st team All-American as a senior in 2005 at the University of Tennessee was chosen by the Dodgers with the 40th overall pick last June, but did not sign. Hochevar has been pitching this season for the independent Fort Worth Cats, going 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA in 4 starts.
STARTERS: RH David Elder (1-0, 3.21, 1 save) vs. RH Ezequiel Astacio (1-1, 3.74)
Elder makes his 3rd consecutive start, following 13 relief appearances. The 30-year old right-hander has not allowed a run in 15.1 innings over his last 4 outings. His last start was last Wednesday vs. New Orleans; Elder picked up his 1st win this season in a 6-4 victory (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K). Elder posted a 1.71 ERA in May - 6 runs lower than his 7.71 ERA in April. In 3 relief appearances vs. Round Rock, he has no record and a 4.91 ERA. In 2005, Elder began the season with Somerset of the independent Atlantic League. He was 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA and 6 saves in 32 games. His contract was purchased by KC on August 8 and he was assigned to Omaha. In 11 relief appearances with the Royals, he went 2-0 and did not allow an earned run over 16.0 innings. He gave up just 8 hits, walking 7 batters and striking out 16. Elder pitched in parts of the 2002 and 2003 season with the Cleveland Indians. He had an impressive 1st season in the big leagues in 2002, posting a 3.13 ERA in 15 relief appearances while going 0-2; he notched 23 strikeouts in 23.0 innings. Elder was selected by the Rangers in the 4th round of the 1997 draft out of Georgia Tech, where he was a teammate of Nomar Garciaparra.
