Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - The Houston Astros purchased the contract of Express left-handed pitcher Philip Barzilla on Tuesday, placing right-hander Brandon Backe on the 15- to 60-day disabled list to make room for the former Rice University pitcher on the 40-man roster.
Barzilla, who was activated and is in uniform for Houston's game against the Chicago Cubs tonight, was selected by the Astros in the 4th round (116th overall) of the 2001 draft and has worked his way through the club's farm system over the past five years.
The 27-year-old Houston native pitched for the Italian National Team during the 2006 World Baseball Classic before carving out a 4.13 earned-run average over nine starts (48 innings) with the Express.
Barzilla tossed a complete-game shutout on May 23, striking out nine while holding Las Vegas hitless over the final 8 2/3 innings of an 8-0 win. He allowed one or no runs in four of his nine starts this season and gave up just one home run.
