Oil Kings Step up in Critical Win over Lethbridge

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings were all about being energized for the most important game of the year to date and that energy paid off as they got goals from Lane Bauer (29), Brandon Baddock (22), Aaron Irving (9) and Brett Pollock (28) on route to a heart-stopping 4-3 victory Sunday night over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The guys were optimistic coming off of a hard-fought loss last night to the Calgary Hitmen and stuck to the gameplan outhustling, outskating and outshooting the Hurricanes while receiving some timely saves from Payton Lee in the win.

"I saw the hand go up for too many men on the ice and your heart sinks for a second," said Oil Kings head coach Steve Hamilton. "But the guys owned it. It was a mistake and we owned it. Great win for us. We battle right to the end."

There were four goals in the first as the Canes opened up the game with a Brayden Burke goal. Bauer and Baddock each had a powerplay marker before Lethbridge evened the game at two, also on the man advantage.

The lone goal in the middle frame came with just 13 seconds left as Irving took a Pollock feed and rifled it past a screened Stuart Skinner.

The third period saw some tight checking and the Oil Kings bent but did not break holding off a furious Lethbridge attack including a couple 3-on-1's outshooting them 15-13 in the final frame and 44-35 overall. Pollock's goal would end up the game-winner as he threw a dart 160 feet into the empty Hurricane net.

"Those are two huge points for us," said Pollock. "We needed those points and we showed a lot of character in this win."

In the ever so tight battle for the final wild card position in the Eastern Conference, the Oil Kings (29-33-6-1) managed to stay two points ahead of the Medicine Hat Tigers (29-36-3-2), who also won tonight toppling the Hitmen. Edmonton plays its game in hand Tuesday night in Cranbrook, BC as they take on the Kootenay Ice at 7pm. Corey Graham has the call on TSN 1260.
