Wheat Kings Roll Past Blades
March 13, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their season high win streak to six games Saturday night with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Saskatoon Blades.
Not only did the win complete a sweep of a weekend home and home series, the Wheat Kings moved four points up on second place Lethbridge in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference as the Hurricanes fell 6-1 in Red Deer.
The Wheat Kings were led by linemates Jayce Hawryluk and Nolan Patrick, who each had a goal and three points as Brandon jumped out to a 6-1 first period lead and never looked back.
By doing so, the dynamic duo became the first Wheat King pair to eclipse the 100-point plateau since Mike Leclerc and Peter Schaefer scored 111 and 108 points respectively during the 1995-96 Western Hockey League season.
As well, Patrick became the first 17-year old Wheat King to reach the century mark since Ray Allison and Brian Propp did it in 1976-77.
Defenceman Ivan Provorov and 16-year old rookie Stelio Mattheos added two goals each for the winners while singles came off the sticks of Reid Duke and John Quenneville. Mattheos' second of the game - the only goal scored in the second period - was the Wheat Kings Lucky 7 goal and earned all 4,900 fans in attendance a "free" 2+2+2 breakfast (with the purchase of a beverage) at Brandon's Smittys Restaurants.
Fans will have until next Friday, March 18th to take advantage of this offer.
With the win, Brandon improves to 45-18-4-2 with three games to play. The Wheat Kings trail the league leading Victoria Royals by two points.
The Wheat Kings will bring the curtain down on the 2015-16 regular season with three more home games this coming week - Tuesday night vs Swift Current, Friday night against Moose Jaw and the Regina Pats will pay a visit to Westman Place on Saturday.
Tickets to all three games as well as Brandon's first two playoff games - scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th - will go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling 726-3555.
Friday night's game was a presentation of Tim Hortons Westman, with five locations in Brandon and another on the Trans Canada Highway in Virden.
