Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (8-2-1-1) scored early and often as they dispatched the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-5-0-0) by a 7-0 score on Tuesday night at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest after Simon Kubicek threw a harmless looking shot towards the Lethbridge net from just inside the Hurricanes blueline that dipped under the blocker of Bryan Thomson for the game's opening goal.

Kubicek extended the Edmonton lead 6:07 later with his second goal of the frame after he drilled a point-shot past Thomson, who had been bowled over in his crease by his own defenceman.

Jakub Demek made it a 3-0 lead at the 9:51 mark of the period after cashing in from the doorstep on a rebound off a Josh Williams shot on an Oil Kings odd-man rush into the Lethbridge zone.

Shortly after the Demek tally, the Hurricanes had their best chance of the period with Logan Barlage letting fly on a hard one-timer from the left-wing circle, but Edmonton netminder Sebastian Cossa slid across to rob the veteran sniper.

Carson Latimer added one more for the home side before the period was out after he was setup for a backdoor tap-in by Dylan Guenther, who was sprung on the odd man rush with Latimer thanks to a beautiful 50-foot pass through the neutral zone by Carter Souch.

The Oil Kings had an even quicker start to the second period with Guenther scoring just 43 ticks into the middle stanza to make it a 5-0 Edmonton lead. The Arizona Coyotes first-rounder snuck in behind the Lethbridge defence, took a pass from Souch and filtered a re-direct between the legs of Thomson.  The goal was the 100th career point for Guenther.

Josh Williams got in on the scoring at 5:21 of the period after he zipped a shot past Thomson from the slot after a nifty setup by Jalen Luypen.  That goal would spell the end of the night for Thomson as he was relieved of his crease duties by Jared Picklyk after surrendering six goals on 23 shots.

Kobe Verbicky collected his first career WHL goal with 3:34 left in the period as he slid a puck between the legs of Picklyk on a 2-on-1 rush to send the Oil Kings to the dressing room with a 7-0 lead.

The Oil Kings took their foot off the gas in the third period and cruised home to the shutout victory, but not before a late flurry by the Hurricanes in attempt to blemish the 10th career clean sheet for Cossa, but the Edmonton netminder was equal to the task.

Next up, the Oil Kings hit the road to Calgary on Friday, November 5 to battle the Hitmen for the first time this season.
