Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Prince Albert, SK.: The Edmonton Oil Kings nailed down their first win in seven games with a 3-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. Rookies Michael St. Croix and Dylan Wruck scored within a minute of each other in the first period to set up the victory. Then goaltender Torrie Jung took over in his second game back after recovering from the flu. The 20 year old made 42 saves to back stop the victory.
"We needed our 20 year old goalie to steal us a win and he stepped up and did just that in the second period," said Head Coach Steve Pleau. "Overall, I think our best period was the third and the guys earned the victory by closing strong."
St. Croix seems to be gaining confidence as he extended his point streak to six games. The Oil Kings top pick in the 2008 Bantam Draft has a goal in five of those games.
"He is a very talented player with a lot of natural ability you can't teach," said Pleau. "He has vision, good hockey sense and a nose for the net."
St. Croix opened the scoring about half way through the opening frame when he hopped off the bench, streaked into the Raiders end and scored from a bad angle on goalie Garrett Zemlack. The Oil Kings made it two nothing when Michael Burns set up Wruck on a two one for his second goal of the season. It was Burns first game back after missing nine with a shoulder injury.
The Oil Kings got into some penalty problems in the second, but Jung stood tall making some outstanding saves. The Raiders did manage to get a goal even strength when former Oil Kings forward Craig McCallum fired one past Jung late in the period. The 20 year old has 12 goals on the season.
Tomas Vincour scored in the third period to put the Oil Kings up 3-1. It was Vincour's team leading 11th goal of the year and it came in his first game back after missing four contests with the flu. The Raiders Igor Revenko scored in the last minute but Edmonton held on for a 3-2 win.
The Oil Kings (8-11-2-3) were outshot for the 17th time in 24 games but escaped with a 3-1 win. The Raiders (11-11-0-2) are still three points up on the Oil Kings in the tight Eastern Conference standings.
The Oil Kings move on to Swift Current tomorrow night for a game with the Broncos. That will be their sixth straight game away from Rexall Place. The Oil Kings wrap up their road trip on Tuesday, November 17th when they will meet the Regina Pats for the first time this season. The Oil Kings return home Friday, November 20th for their only game of the year versus the Spokane Chiefs. The Oil Kings will be wearing a Special Jersey that will be auctioned off at the game to raise money to support the battle against prostate cancer.
